As a Homeless Shelter Worker with 4 years of experience working in emergency and domestic shelters and transitional housing, I apply with great interest for this opportunity. 

I am currently a Shelter Coordinator at Sunnybank Community Services, where I register new clients, issue photo IDs, explain shelter rules & policies, provide linen, store personal items, and do everything I can to help clients settle into our 25-bed facility. I also perform daily check-ins and check-outs in the system, escort clients to health or services appointments, and conduct random walk-throughs to ensure everyone is safe and following the rules. I also participate in case reviews and assessments as needed.

This builds upon my time as an Assistant Coordinator at Halliwell Women’s Shelter, and my post-graduate traineeship at Pelican Heights Transitional Center. These roles have helped me to develop very strong communication, interpersonal, and listening skills, alongside the ability to engage with empathy, seek practical solutions to highly personal problems, and defuse tense situations.

In addition to my experience, I hold a Bachelor of Social Work. My passion for supporting homeless people stems from my Uncle Hal who, following the death of my aunt, fell into alcoholism, lost his license to practice medicine, and ended up on the streets despite family efforts to help with limited local resources. He has powerfully shaped my perception of the homeless, and fuels my desire to help others and tackle stigma.
